Jackson Elementary School Receives Grants for $850,000 for a Green Schoolyard
Jackson Family, I am excited to announce that our school has received a grant from the California State Natural Resources Agency and the Disney Foundation for a combined total of $850,000.00! We are looking forward to transforming our asphalt-covered school ground into a park-like green space that will improve our children's socio-emotional health, provide experiential learning opportunities, and allow for motor skill development through exploratory play in natural habitats while contributing to our local eco system.
Without the incredible work done by Amigos De Los Rios, our non-profit partner who wrote and applied for both of the grants, we would not have had this opportunity. We are so grateful for their support and dedication to bringing this dream into a reality. It is our hope that this is the beginning of a movement to green all of the schoolyards in the Pasadena Unified School District, so that all of our children receive the amazing benefits of nature.
This page will be dedicated to sharing information about the process for Jackson, as well as a resource to learn more about green schoolyards. If you are interested in learning more about this movement please consider visiting the Green Schoolyards America website. Green Schoolyards America seeks to transform asphalt-covered school grounds into park-like green spaces that improve children’s well-being, learning, and play while contributing to the ecological health and resilience of our cities. Green Schoolyards America is working to change the norm for school ground design, use, and management so that all children will have access to the natural world in the places they already visit on a daily basis. Their programs support the living school ground movement, build relationships that help it succeed, and work to embed this perspective in our existing institutions and policy and regulatory frameworks.
